Beyond the Crawl Space: How Morning Training Makes Me Better at My Job

Introduction

Starting Strong, Finishing Stronger

WHY MY DAY BEGINS AT 6 AM ON THE MATS

Most people don't think about what their crawl space contractor does before showing up for an inspection.

But I believe what happens before I get to your house matters just as much as what happens during the inspection itself.

That's why my day starts at 6 AM on the mats at Triangle Academy of Jiu-jitsu.

Some might call it crazy - getting up before dawn to train when you've got a full day of crawl space work ahead.

But I've learned that being sharp in body and mind makes every inspection better, every customer interaction clearer, and every decision more focused.

My Training Journey

I've been training at Triangle Academy for seven years now. Started with just jiu-jitsu, but these days I'm mixing in some boxing and getting back into muay thai. It's not about becoming a fighter - it's about staying sharp, focused, and ready for the physical demands of crawl space work.

Let's be honest - balancing training with four kids and a growing business isn't easy. Some weeks, I don't hit all my training goals. But seven years of showing up on those mats has taught me something important: consistency matters more than perfection. It's the same approach I take with every crawl space inspection - show up ready, give it your best, and keep improving.

Getting those competitive juices flowing again isn't just about personal achievement. Every time I train, I'm building the strength, endurance, and mental clarity I need to serve my customers better. Because at the end of the day, that's what matters - being the best I can be for the people who trust me with their homes.

The Morning Advantage

There's something special about starting your day at 6 AM on the mats. While most people are just hitting the snooze button, I'm already working on being better than I was yesterday. By the time I get to my first inspection, I've already accomplished something meaningful - and that energy carries through every crawl space I enter.

I've noticed a real difference in my work on training days. My mind's clearer when I'm documenting issues. My explanations to homeowners are more focused. Even crawling through tight spaces feels easier. That morning workout isn't just about staying in shape - it's about being my best for every customer I serve.

Balancing Act

Running a crawl space business while raising four kids is already a full plate. Adding early morning training might seem impossible. But here's the thing - when something matters, you find a way. Sometimes that means missing a training session because a kid is sick, or pushing through a workout when you'd rather sleep in.

It's not about being perfect. It's about staying committed to improvement, both in business and in life. My kids see me leaving for training early in the morning, and they're learning something important about dedication. My customers get a contractor who's focused and energized, ready to solve their crawl space problems.

The Business Impact

This isn't just about personal fitness. Every hour on those mats makes me better at my job. When I'm documenting water damage or explaining encapsulation options to a homeowner, that mental clarity from morning training pays off. Physical training helps me handle the demands of crawling under houses all day, but it's the mental benefits that really make a difference.

I've had customers comment on my energy level during afternoon inspections. They don't know it's because I started my day with jiu-jitsu, but they benefit from having a contractor who's sharp and focused. In this business, attention to detail matters - and starting my day with training helps me maintain that focus when it counts.

Life Lessons from the Mats

What I've learned in seven years of training goes way beyond physical techniques. Jiu-jitsu teaches you that fundamentals matter - just like in crawl space work. You can't skip steps. You can't take shortcuts. Every detail counts, whether you're working on a submission hold or installing a vapor barrier.

The discipline it takes to show up at 6 AM carries over into how I run my business. When I tell a customer I'll be there at a certain time, I'm there. When I promise a certain level of quality, I deliver. These aren't just business practices - they're habits reinforced every morning on those mats.

Community and Growth

One of the best parts about training at Triangle Academy is watching others succeed. Just today, I saw some friends earn their purple and blue belts. In martial arts, like in business, we celebrate each other's progress. That supportive environment reminds me why I got into this work - to help people and make things better.

The friends I've made through training understand the grind of showing up every day to get better. It's the same mindset I bring to every crawl space inspection. Every day is a chance to improve, to serve better, to solve problems more effectively.

Just wrapped up a spray foam encapsulation in Nashville. This one came out great. It's our 125 mil system - the highest-end option we offer. Spray foam up the walls, heavy-duty vapor barrier on the floor, dehumidifier installed and ready to run. When you see it all come together like this, you're looking at a crawl sp

We just secured our first warehouse. First real storefront. First office where customers can walk in and sit down with us if they want to. It's a big deal for us. Seven years of doing this, and we're finally at a point where the business needs more space to keep up with the work. We've got a third crew now. We're boo

I'm up in an attic right now inspecting a project we're about to start. This one needs the full treatment. Spray foam, new insulation, plywood floors. When we're done, this homeowner is going to have cool, usable storage space where right now there's just old fiberglass and wasted potential.
