Inside My Own Crawl Space: Why I Installed What I Recommend

Introduction

SMART Technology in the Crawl Space

MORE UPDATES FROM MY PERSONAL HOME'S ENCAPSULATION

I believe in practicing what I preach.

That's why I just spent two weeks upgrading the crawl space in my own 2,300-square-foot home.

If I'm going to recommend solutions to my customers, I want to know exactly how they work - not just from installing them in other homes, but from living with them in mine.

This wasn't just another job for me.

It was a chance to test everything we offer, to make sure it works exactly like I tell my customers it will.

Plus, I got to teach my kids a thing or two about doing things right the first time.

The Foundation of Quality

First things first - we pulled out all the old insulation.

Starting fresh is important, and I wouldn't recommend anything different to my customers.

Then we laid down drain mat across the entire crawl space.

This creates a channel for any water that might find its way in, keeping it from pooling under your vapor barrier.

Speaking of vapor barriers, I went with 120 mil poly for my home.

Why?

Because after years of crawling under houses, I've seen what works and what doesn't.

The thicker material stands up better over time, and since this is my house, I want it done right.

It's the same material I recommend when customers ask for my honest opinion about what I'd put in my own home - and now I really mean it.

  • A basement with a lot of insulation and a light on the ceiling.

  • A basement with a lot of pipes and columns

  • An empty basement with a wooden ceiling and white walls.

The Dehumidification System

When it comes to dehumidifiers, I only trust Aprilaire.

That's why I put an E-100 in my own crawl space.

But here's what's really cool - I can control it right from my phone.

If I'm on vacation and want to check the humidity levels under my house, I just open the app.

No crawling around required.

I tell my customers all the time how important a good dehumidifier is in Middle Tennessee.

Now I can show them exactly how mine works and the difference it makes.

It's one thing to talk about features - it's another to use them in your own home every day.

Lighting Revolution

Most crawl spaces are dark, scary places.

Not mine - I'm installing 60 lights under there.

Sounds like a lot, right?

But here's why it matters: when you can actually see what's going on under your house, you catch problems early.

Plus, it makes life easier for any plumber or HVAC person who needs to work down there.

I'm trying out different types of lights too.

We've got standard LED bulbs, color-changing strips, and wireless options.

Some people might think color-changing lights in a crawl space is overkill, but wait until you see how easy it makes spotting problems in different areas.

Smart Technology Integration

Here's where things get really interesting.

Everything in my crawl space - lights, dehumidifier, everything - can be controlled from my phone.

We added smart plugs throughout the space, so I can turn things on and off without crawling under the house.

Want to check on your crawl space at night?

Just open the app and turn on the lights.

Need to adjust the dehumidifier?

Tap a button.

Having a plumber come over?

You can light up the crawl space before they arrive.

It's not about being fancy - it's about making it easier to take care of your home.

The Personal Touch

This wasn't just another weekend project for me.

I had my kids helping out, passing me tools and learning about what makes a crawl space work right.

Sure, it might have taken a little longer doing it this way, but that's how we do things at Crawl Logic - no rushing, just quality work.

Working on my own house reminded me why I started this business in the first place.

Every measurement, every seam, every light fixture - it all matters.

When you're installing something in your own home, you make sure it's done exactly right.

That's the same care we bring to every customer's crawl space.

Why This Matters For Your Home

Here's the bottom line: everything I put in my crawl space is stuff we offer to our customers.

I'm not just selling solutions - I'm using them myself.

When I tell you the Aprilaire E-100 is the best dehumidifier out there, it's because I trust it enough to put it in my own home.

When I recommend adding plenty of lights, it's because I know what a difference it makes.

I'm not asking any customer to try something I haven't tested myself.

Every feature, every upgrade, every solution - I've lived with it.

And if it's not good enough for my home, I won't recommend it for yours.

Crawl Logic

No pressure, no upselling - just honest advice from someone who takes this stuff seriously enough to put it in his own home.

Here's something most crawl space companies won't tell you: installing encapsulation is just the first step. What really matters is knowing your system is working properly day after day, month after month. But too many companies follow what I call the "install and hope" method - they do the work, collect the check, and leave you hoping everything stays dry.

Big news from the crawl space world - I'm heading to Italy for my honeymoon! It's my first time leaving the country, and I couldn't be more excited. But here's the thing about running a local business: you can't just put a "Gone Fishing" sign on the door and disappear for two weeks.

When I pulled up to my grandmother's house in Chattanooga, I wasn't just there as a crawl space expert. I was there as a grandson who wanted to make sure his grandmother could live safely in the home she's had my whole life. This 1929 house has been part of our family for generations, but like many old homes, it needed some serious attention underneath.
