What 7 Years of Running My Own Crawl Space Business Taught Me

Introduction

Seven Years of Growth and Gratitude

LESSONS FROM BUILDING CRAWL LOGIC NASHVILLE

Good morning. I'm Josh, owner of Crawl Logic, and today I want to talk about something different than crawl space problems or repair solutions.

Today, I want to talk about gratitude.

Seven years ago, I started this business.

Before that, I spent five years working for the big corporate companies.

That means I've been dealing with crawl spaces for almost 12 years total - a third of my life.

And you know what? I wake up excited every single day.

This business runs on trust.

Every person who recommends me, refers me, or trusts me with their home or their clients - you're the reason Crawl Logic exists.

So today, I want to share what seven years of running my own crawl space business has taught me about work, service, and doing what you love.

The Power of Trust and Relationships

Here's something they don't teach you in those corporate training programs: your business lives or dies on relationships.

Every referral matters. Every review matters. Every time someone tells their neighbor or their real estate agent about the work we did - that matters more than any billboard or marketing campaign ever could.

I've built Crawl Logic on trust, not advertising budgets. When a home inspector trusts me with their client, that's huge. When a customer trusts me enough to recommend me to their family, that means everything. This business runs on the relationships I build, one honest inspection at a time.

And here's the thing - you can't fake that kind of trust. You earn it by showing up, doing good work, and treating people right. Every single time.

Teaching vs. Selling

When I come to your house for an inspection, I'm not there to give you a sales pitch. I'm there to teach you about crawl space science.

That's the biggest difference between how I work now and how I worked at those corporate companies. Back then, it was all about the sale. Hit your numbers. Close the deal. Move on to the next one.

Now? I take my time explaining what's happening under your house and why it matters. I show you the 4K video. I walk you through the photos. I explain the science behind moisture problems, ventilation, and encapsulation. Because when you understand what's going on, you can make a better decision.

I'm not just here to sell you something. I'm here to help you understand your home better. And honestly, that approach works better for everyone. You feel confident in your decision, and I feel good about the work we're doing.

Finding Your Passion

You've probably heard that old saying: "Find something you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

I used to think that was just something people put on motivational posters. But seven years into running Crawl Logic, I get it now.

I wake up excited on Monday mornings. I look forward to inspections. I genuinely enjoy going into crawl spaces and solving problems. And now I'm teaching crawl space classes too, which combines two things I'm passionate about - crawl spaces and teaching people.

When your work lines up with what you actually care about, everything changes. I don't watch the clock. I don't dread going to work. This doesn't feel like work to me. It feels like doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

A Servant's Heart in Business

Here's what I've learned about running a service business: it's called a service business for a reason.

I've got what people call a servant's heart. That means I'm here to serve you, not just take your money. When I give you a recommendation, it's honest. If you don't need work done, I'll tell you that. If there's a simple fix, I'll show you how to do it yourself.

Some people might think that's bad business. Why would you turn down work? But here's the thing - serving people well builds something bigger than a single sale. It builds trust. It builds relationships. It builds a reputation.

And at the end of the day, I can sleep well knowing I did right by people. That matters more to me than padding my numbers.

Teaching Crawl Space Classes

One of the most fulfilling things I've added recently is teaching crawl space classes. This is a new chapter for me, and it combines everything I'm passionate about.

Teaching has always been part of what I do. Every inspection is a teaching opportunity. But now I'm able to share that knowledge with other people in the industry too. It's about raising the bar for everyone and making sure homeowners get better service across the board.

When you teach, you learn even more. Every class I teach makes me better at what I do. And knowing that I'm helping improve the whole industry in Nashville - that's pretty special.

The Gratitude That Keeps Me Going

Every like on a post matters. Every comment, every DM, every phone call - they all mean something to me.

When someone takes the time to leave a review or recommend me to a friend, that's not just good for business. It's a reminder that I'm doing this right. It's confirmation that the servant's heart approach actually works.

I don't take any of it for granted. The trust you place in me, the referrals you send my way, the kind words after a job well done - that gratitude fuels everything I do. It's why I wake up excited every single day.

This business exists because of the relationships I've built with all of you. And I'm grateful for every single one.

Crawl Logic

What This Means for You

If you're dealing with crawl space issues, I'd love to help. But I want you to know what you're getting when you call me.

You're getting someone who's going to teach you, not pitch you. Someone who'll give you an honest recommendation, even if that means less money for me. Someone who genuinely loves this work and cares about doing it right.

I'll show you exactly what's happening under your house with clear video and photos. I'll explain the science behind it. And I'll give you straight talk about what needs to be done.

That's what seven years of running my own business has taught me matters most - honesty, education, and service.

You just spent thousands of dollars encapsulating your crawl space. The crew finished up, everything looks great, and they handed you a warranty. But here's a question most homeowners don't think to ask: how do you actually know it's working? That's where an 18-dollar humidity monitor comes in. It's a simple device th

Just got back from Chattanooga where I taught my first crawl space class. Ten contractors spent the day learning crawl space science, inspection techniques, and how to deliver honest presentations to homeowners. We also went out and inspected a complex structural job together.

When temperatures dropped to 7 degrees last night, I did something that might seem odd - I grabbed my phone and headed down into my crawl space. Not because I was worried about frozen pipes or any problems. I went down there to show you exactly what a properly encapsulated crawl space does when it gets this cold.
