For six and a half years, we didn't take deposits at Crawl Logic. You called, we came out, we gave you a quote. If you wanted the work done, we scheduled it. When the job was finished and you were happy, you paid us.


That's how we did business. It felt like the right way to run things.


But that changed recently. We're now asking for a 30% deposit before we start work. And I want to explain why.


It's not something I wanted to do. But it's something we had to do. And I'd rather be straight with people about it than pretend it didn't happen.

How We've Always Done Business

When I started Crawl Logic, I wanted to do things differently than the big companies I used to work for. No deposits was part of that. It meant we trusted you, and you trusted us. Simple.


You didn't have to put money down before seeing any work. You weren't locked in if something felt off. And we didn't get paid until you were satisfied.


That's the kind of business I wanted to run. Local. Owner-operated. Built on trust.


For over six years, it worked just fine.

What Happened

We had a job scheduled to start today. Everything was lined up. Materials ordered. Crew ready. We'd spent thousands on the specific products this homeowner needed for their crawl space.


The day we're supposed to start, they call and say they don't want the job done anymore. Just like that. No warning. No discussion.


We tried reaching out. Phone calls, text messages, Facebook messages. Nothing. They went dark.


And now we're sitting on thousands of dollars in materials we can't use. Custom orders for their specific job. Can't return them. Can't use them on another project. Just sitting in our warehouse.


This isn't the first time it's happened. People cancel the day we're supposed to start. They stop answering after we've already bought everything. And we eat the cost every single time.

Why This Matters for a Small Business

We're not a big corporation with deep pockets. We don't have a national budget to absorb losses like this. When someone cancels after materials are ordered, that money comes straight out of what keeps this business running.


Every crawl space job is different. We order materials based on what your specific project needs. The liner. The dehumidifier. The sump pump. The insulation. It's not like we can just swap it over to the next job and call it even.


One cancellation hurts. Multiple cancellations over time? That adds up fast.


We tried to make it work without deposits for as long as we could. But at some point, you have to protect your business so you can keep serving the people who do follow through.

The New Policy: What It Means

Starting now, we're asking for a 30% deposit before work begins. That covers our material costs. That's it.


We're not collecting the full payment up front. We're not trying to get money before we've earned it. You still pay the rest when the job is done and you're happy with the work.


This just means that if someone cancels at the last minute, we're not stuck holding thousands in materials we ordered specifically for them.


It's a fair policy. It protects us without putting an unfair burden on you. And honestly, it's what most businesses already do.

Why We're Being Transparent

I could have just started asking for deposits and not said anything about it. A lot of businesses would have done it that way.


But that's not how we operate. If we're changing something after six and a half years, I want people to understand why.


Running a business means adapting. Sometimes that means changing policies you didn't think you'd ever have to change. It's not fun. But it's necessary.


I'd rather be honest about it than act like nothing happened. The customers who have been with us from the start deserve that. And the new customers coming in deserve to know we're making decisions for the right reasons.


We're not trying to nickel and dime anyone. We're trying to stay in business so we can keep doing good work for people who need it.
